My career in education began after I graduated Michigan State University. My first degree was in Advertising. After graduating from Michigan State in 2003 with a BA in Advertising I began substitute teaching for the Taylor School District in Taylor, Michigan, while I searched for a job in the advertising field. I quickly learned that education is where I belonged and decided to go back to school. In the summer of 2004 I returned to the University of Michigan Dearborn to obtain a major in Social Studies and a minor in History which would qualify me to teach those subjects. I began my Masters in Teaching in the fall of 2005 which allows me to receive my masters in conjunction with a teaching certificate.
During the five years in which I returned to college I had many different career experiences in both advertising and education. The first couple years I subbed in the Taylor School District daily in a variety of subjects. In the 2005-2006 school year I long termed in an eighth grade art classroom at Hoover Middle School, in Taylor, for six months while the teacher was out on medical leave. This experience reinforced my education on classroom management and helped to diversify my teaching style.
In the summer of 2006 I took a year hiatus from education and moved to Tucson, Arizona with my boyfriend, while he completed a year long pharmacy residency. While in Arizona I decided to give advertising another shot and took a job as an advertising account executive at Tucson Newspapers. I worked there for four months then realized (again!) I needed to be in education. As a result I enrolled to be a substitute at the Tucson Unified School District.
After subbing for a couple weeks, within the district, I took a long term position in a middle school Emotionally Impaired room at Secrist Middle School. Here I learned a lot about different types of impairments and many ways to deal with students who are effected by emotional issues. Upon completion of this assignment I took over a seventh and eighth grade ESL and Spanish position. This teaching assignment further enforced my ability to adapt to different situations in teaching (as I speak only very basic Spanish and was teaching many students who had Spanish as their first language). At the completion of the school year I returned to Michigan to finish up my course work for my Master's.
During the 2007-2008 first semester of the school year I began subbing in Taylor. In November I took a seventh grade math, long term position at Hoover Middle School. I finished this position right before the Christmas break. Again this helped to diversify what and how I teach, the many different subjects have introduced me to many different types of learners and have made me examine the eight intelligences more closely.
In January of 2008 I will move to Las Vegas, where my boyfriend has taken a faculty pharmacy position at the University of Southern Nevada. Here I will sub for the remainder of the school year. In the fall I will student teach in Clark County School District and will be actively seeking a middle school or high school position in the district in 2009.
